Is accommodation for queer refugees in Sweden safe? with RFSL Newcomers

5 July, 2023|16:00 - 17:00

In this panel talk, we will touch upon the issue of the safety of accommodation for LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers in Sweden.
Unsafe accommodation conditions are a terrifying image to LGBTQ+ refugees worldwide, including in Sweden. Queer asylum seekers, already fleeing persecution and discrimination in their home countries, often find themselves in precarious living situations upon arrival. LGBTQ+ refugees may encounter hostility, discrimination, and violence within shared accommodations or shelters.
With our panellists, we will talk about what is the situation like in Sweden right now, what are the psychological implications of unsafe accommodation and what can be improved to secure welcoming accommodation options to ensure the protection and well-being of LGBTQ+ newcomers.
Panellists:
SARMED AL RUBAIEE, queer activist and a member of Newcomers
MIRYAM DONZELLI, psychologist and a project coordinator, Läkare i världen
AINO GRÖNDAHL, migration lawyer and researcher, RFSL
BARBORA MAJDISOVA, Newcomers Project Manager, RFSL Malmö
Moderated by:
SOPHIE BERIA, International Programme Manager, RFSL
