How do international media portray the war in Ukraine? The queer perspective

8 July, 2022|16:00 - 17:00

In the current post-truth era emotions are more important than the facts, and media coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian war shows it clearly. People want to see victims, divide everything into black and white, or desperately look for “good Russians” or “Ukrainian Nazis”. Russian propaganda continues to spread throughout Europe, and sometimes it is really hard to both fact-check and distinguish the truth.

The narratives surrounding LGBTQIA+ Ukrainians and their stories get even more conflicted. During this session we will explore how international media-channels fail when covering the Ukrainian war, and what steps media consumers can take to think critically.

Edward Reese, a trans/nonbinary activist from KyivPride, is a part of the transhealth advocacy group.
