Towards a Queer Decolonial Approach to the War in Syria

8 July, 2022|11:00 - 12:00

This lecture will look into different mobilizations of queerness during the public uprisings in Syria and the war that followed. By drawing on several case studies

and ethnographic fieldwork in Lebanon between 2018 and 2019 with 20 self-identified Syrian and Palestinian LGBTQIA+ students, migrant workers, artists, and activists, this

lecture will present and explore the sexuality politics in Syria in the context of the ‘war on terror.’

Biography: Razan Ghazzawi (they/she) is a Syrian Palestinian queer femme non-binary, doctoral researcher at the University of Sussex. Their research looks at the

intersection of sexuality politics, protest, queer of color critique, and the war in Syria. They are a former political prisoner of the Assad regime and were exiled by ISIS and

Al Qaeda groups in Idleib. They are the winner of the Frontline Defenders’ award in 2012 and received ISA’s LGBTQIA+ Caucus’s Emergent Scholar award in 2022.
